Rules and regulations for dealing with Emergency vehicles.

Dealing with the emergency service is something we all have to do when we use our roads.Weather its an ambulance, fire service or maybe the Garda ,learning the correct procedure in dealing with them is vital. Here is a video from the GEM in the uk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btRHvQEIkcU to help keep you and others around you safe when you come across an emergency vehicle. There is plenty of information here to educate even the most experienced drivers and it's definitely worth watching. Our driving instructors cover this in lesson 7 of the edt programme (sharing the road) and teach you best practices in coping when you see the blues and twos. For further information on this topic please contact a member of our friendly team on 014061925.

The new National Driver License Service in Ireland.

Learntodrivedublin.ie welcomes the new driver licensing system in Ireland which was introduced on Tuesday 29/11/2013.http://www.ndls.ie/en/Here you will find all the necessary information from locations of centres to what documentation you will need to fee's involved. As of 12/11/13 there seems to be quite long delays in processing your application which in my opinion is normal with any new system so the NDLS are asking drivers to only attend centres if your license is due for renewal in the next four weeks. For any further questions on the above please feel free to contact our friendly team today on 014061925.

Our top three faults we see when preparing our students for a driving test.

http://learntodrivedublin.ie/ Each and every day we see candidates for driving test preparation the same faults keep on arising. We are listing our top three that we feel come up over and over again.Starting off with the observation section we have No 1 failing to observation correctly at T-junctions.Now what does this mean exactly?Lets start off by imaging two  types of T-junction ,open and closed. An open T-junction is when you can see clearly in both directions on approach ,an by see clearly I mean at least 100 yards in each direction. If there is a yield sign here then you may not have to stop to access ,however at closed T-junctions were your view is obscured in either one or both directions by for example walls, bushes, houses, parked cars or any other hazard then a stop is essential regardless of what the sign says.By stopping this will give you the opportunity to access the road properly before committing to the turn. You must look clearly in both directions before moving on.It is vital that when you move into the new road that you do not cause another road user to slow or stop for your actions. I always ask my students to use the LADA routine here.Look into the road,Access the situation ,Decide on what your course of action will be,An Act on the decision that you make.No 2 Reaction to hazards. What is a hazard exactly you may ask?It is anything that makes you change your speed of course.Reading the road well ahead and reacting early to obstructions is vital.Checking mirrors well in advance and deciding if a signal is necessary is vital.A common fault I see here constantly is a student driving too close to a hazard and leaving all observation and adjusting position to the last second.Residential areas are prone to a high volumes of parked cars so make sure your keeping yourself in a position that you can clearly see the road ahead and all other road users can see you.As the list of hazards is endless this is just a simple example of dealing with them,an No 3 is and to alot of peoples surprise driving TOO SLOW.Isn't driving slow the safest way to go I hear you say.No not exactly as you then become the obstruction on the road. This is a very common fault amongst drivers who tell me that they are always above the speed limit in their everyday driving. They know that this is an obvious fault so on pre test day they slow their speed down ,but often far too much and are constantly looking at their speedometer .Driving at the correct speed without looking at clocks is an essential part of safe driving where by your eyes are always on the road.So if your driving test sheet has marks on progress then this maybe were your going wrong. There are plenty more areas in lack of progression but this is one that occurs more frequently. So before embarking on any driving test make sure that you leave plenty of time to prepare yourself.Get an assessment done from any qualified ADI and they will tell you exactly what you need. The earlier the better then you will have ample time to make any changes required and have your driving natural rather than forced.

How to become a driving instructor in Ireland.

http://learntodrivedublin.ie/ There has never been a better time to become a driving instructor in Ireland. With the roll out of the essential driver training programme on the 4/4/11 ensuring that learner drivers that received their learner permit on or after that date must complete a minimum of 12 driving lessons with a qualified driving instructor registered with the road safety authority.Depending on what your looking to do you may want to take out a franchise (which we wouldn't recommend)become a partner in a driving school or simply go it alone. The cost in setting yourself up as a driving school can be approx 10,000 euro and that will get you the very basics. What we offer at learn 2 drive is the opportunity to become a self sustained operator capable of working on your own initiative .We will supply all the pupils you book them in when you want and make payment on a weekly basis. You will receive all the support you need from ways to save money on set up to developing your teaching skills to become a top driving instructor. It is vital that you research all the different options to find one that suits.Be very careful of offers from driving schools that offer training with the promise of a job on completion,we would recommend that you get this in writing.Feel free to contact us if you need more information and we will offer you open and frank advise on becoming a driving tutor in Ireland. If you think you have what it takes to become an elite driving instructor then look no further and call us immediately.

How to choose a good driving school.

11/7/13.http://learntodrivedublin.ie/ Choosing a good driving school can be somewhat of a hit and miss experience. You will find yourself bombarded with adverts everywhere claiming that they are the holy grail of driving schools. So how do we distinguish the good from the not so good? How do we make sure we are not handing out our hard earned cash to be met with disappointment? So here are some ideas to ponder.
.What are the reviews and comments about this driving school?A great source to find this info which cannot be falsified is https://www.facebook.com/learntd as each student has their own individual account so it would be impossible to hack into every account and write a fictitious review.Websites as a general rule are flooded with reviews that,s let say dodgy at best .Pupils generally don,t post big long reviews but pop up between one to three sentences about their experience with the driving school.
.Recommendations are good,in fact probably the best way to get a good driving school.Ask friends /family members who they done their driving lessons with and would they recommend them.
.Be very careful if price is your only concern when booking driving lessons. As there are driving schools especially targeting the cheaper end of the market and supplying lesson quality to suit.Ask yourself what is the market average and question why prices maybe higher or lower and ask the school to give examples of how they justify their price.Remember you get what you pay for.
Biggest is not always best.Alot of individual private driving instructors operate on a reputation only basis and for this they need to consistently supply top quality driving lessons .Your will also get the same instructor throughout your lessons and not get chopped and changed .They generally can,t compete with the bigger schools when it comes to advertising revenue so have to rely on the quality service they provide. However the bigger driving schools will have more flexibility for suiting your time schedule.
An finally is my driving instructor on the road safety authority register?http://www.rsa.ie/Utility/Driving-Instructors1/Check-ADI-Register/ this applies to the Irish market only.
We wish you well in your search to find a good driving instructor an hope some of these points help in your quest.

Our pretest package your driving test .

Many driving schools in Dublin offer a pretest service when your preparing for your driving test. However the results that follow are widely different. Each driving instructor has his/her way of preparing a pupil for their test. Here at http://learntodrivedublin.ie/ we have perfected our pretest course to include ,an assessment on lesson 1 ,which assesses your ability on one of the driving test routes in your chosen test centre.A driving test marking sheet is used to give you the most accurate account of your driving level. It is this assessment that is vitally important for you to be successful in your driving test.If you know were your going wrong it's easy to fix.You will then be given a detailed report on all aspects of your driving and you can ask any questions to help get all the correct techniques you'll need to pass your driving test. You'll will then be offered a demonstration drive to visually show you exactly how safe driving is achieved. This is optional but highly recommended. After this your driving instructor can best advise you on what driving lesson training you will require. We also request that you view our driving lesson channel on youtubehttp://www.youtube.com/user/drivinglessondublin?feature=guide

Common mistakes in the driving test.

One of the key areas in been successful in your driving test is the time an effort you put in to the preparation. Some driving test candidates expect to get good results arriving the day of the test or the day before to do ,and I quote...A quick pretest or I just need a few pointers my driving fine. The fact is driving tests are no different than any other test you do.You will get out exactly what you put in.Try to give yourself at least 2 -4 weeks preparation time to allow for learning new techniques and changing any bad driving practices(bad habits)that you may have .Your driving style should look seem-less and not forced. Also when you do a training course it gives you the experience of driving while been under the watchful eye of a trained professional.Make sure that the vehicle you choose to do the driving test has current road tax ,insurance and nct if applicable and that you arrive with your learner permit.A further note on insurance,(you must be named on the policy).http://learntodrivedublin.ie/ can supply pre test driving lessons leading up to your test  and driving test car hire on the day of your driving test.Further to this preparation list I've compiled a short list of faults that occur commonly on the test itself.
.Lack of observation moving off,at junctions, changing lane and roundabouts.
.Failure to react in good time to hazards.
Not using mirrors in good time .
.Not maintaining correct speed for varying situations.
.Incorrect positioning when turning left/right/on the straight and on roundabouts.
.Showing poor observation when conducting manouevres.

Should you need further advise on preparing for your driving test just call 014061925 an speak to one of our team of driving instructors .

What is the key areas when reversing around a corner in your driving test.

http://learntodrivedublin.ieFirstly I'd like to point out that reversing around a corner is not as difficult a task as most people make out.One of the mistakes I see is a pupil trying to keep way to close to the kerb and in doing so neglect their all round awareness because their too busy looking in their left wing mirror.Taking the three areas in the driving test in order that they are on the driving test report sheet.
1)competency.This is your ability to keep the vehicle under full control by proper of the clutch, brake, accelerator, steering and handbrake as necessary. You should also be able to make adequate progress. You should not hit or mount the kerb or swing wildly into the road your reversing.
2)Observation.You should be able to display a high standard of all round observation looking in all directions  .A driver tester does not want to see a pupil just looking in the left hand wing mirror.360 degree view is vital. Our video on how to reverse around a corner http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CunH75RKgqM covers all aspects of covering this manoeuvre in detail.
3)Yielding right of way.Should any other road user approach while your are reversing you should stop immediately.Causing another road user to slow or stop for your actions is not only bad driving practice but may lead to a driving test fail.
For any further assistance on the reverse around a corner please contact us on 01 4061925.

How to choose a good driving school in Dublin.

Starting your driving lessons can be a daunting task for the vast majority of people.http://learntodrivedublin.ie/ has developed a short list of questions to help you make the correct decision when choosing which driving school you want to take your driving lessons with. Here is a list of our top five.
1)Is all of the driving instructors at your driving school fully qualified and registered as approved driving instructors with the road safety authority.

2)What is the driving schools policy on cancellation and refunds. This may seem a negative thing to say at this point but the driving school will understand why your asking this question as it has extreme relevance.

3)Can I choose a male or female driving instructor and can I change driving instructor if I'm not fully happy with the service they are providing.

4)How often can I take my driving lessons and is it up to me when the driving lessons can be taken.

5)Your prices are X ,what service do I get for this price.

A note to remember cheap driving lessons are cheap for a reason .You get what you pay for so be very careful when you see them words cheap driving lessons. Our team of enthusiastic driving instructors are offering quality driving lessons at market average prices.Call us today on 01 4061925.

Learning to follow the correct procedure at roundabouts.

I'm sure we will all agree that following correct procedure at roundabouts is something that can cause great confusion to not only the learner driver but experienced drivers as well.As roundabouts are becoming more popular ,they seem to be springing up almost everywhere.  It is vitally important that we understand the correct discipline for signal use ,approach ,through and exit lanes ,and yielding issues as well as ensuring a high standard of vigilance throughout.Drivers that signal incorrectly or fail to signal at all  can cause great frustration to the drivers who do follow the rules of the road and ensure that they use correct signals at each and every roundabout.By using incorrect or untimely signals we actually slow the whole process down as other have to wait until the very last second to try and determine what  we are doing.Following the correct approach lane is vital as by doing so ensures that we will not be cutting across another drivers path and causing them to take emergency actions for our bad position. You should decide as early as possible which exit you  intend taking and take up correct position accordingly. When you reach the roundabout pay attention to vehicles already on the roundabout and try to judge where they plan to exit.Make sure to follow your lane correctly through the roundabout observing and signals correctly to a safe exit.http://learntodrivedublin.ie/has just released a video on dealing with roundabouts and it covers some of Dublin's most infamous including the Walkinstown,Liffey Valley and Spawell roundabouts to name but a few.If we all could just simply take the time to read the rules of the road or look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4eoc2aoBqo not only could we create a safer system at roundabouts but reduce the annoyance we cause to the driver who puts road safety at the forefront of their everyday approach to driving.25/04/2013.David mcDonnell director of driving instructor training at Learn 2 drive.

New road safety strategy launched

Minister for transport Leo Varadkar has just launched a new road safety strategy which aims to combat the road deaths and serious injuries on our roads. We are looking to close the gap between ourselves and other best practice countries between 2013-2020.The new strategy sets a specific target for 2020 to reduce the number of road deaths to 124 a year.As the number of road deaths has risen somewhat on last year it is a stark reminder to us all that we cannot become complacent where road safety is concerned. Some key measures in this strategy will include,
.Alcolocks to immobilise vehicles if drivers are over the limit,rehabilitative/driving awareness courses for repeat offenders will be considered.
.Consideration will be given to extending the safety camera network to offences other than speeding.
.Measures to combat car clocking.
.In vehicle devices to sense tiredness .
.Employers will be encouraged to implement a handbrake lock for phone use by professional drivers.
.Regular audits an updating of road markings, signage,an safety blackspots.
.Fixed charged notices for cyclists.
.Some added service areas on motorways to combat tiredness.
.Breakdown kits will be made compulsory.

It is clearly on the shoulders of everyone to keep our roads safe weather your on 2 wheels, 4 wheels, 18 wheels,  cyclist, pedestrian or otherwise. It is something we must all unite in to achieve our goals.

Operation Light up

Operation Light up

This week saw, the RSA and An Garda Siochana commence operation light up, which aimed to address the significant issue of defective, broken, missing, or inappropriate use of vehicle lighting. Garda members will specifically target and stop drivers who have defective lighting or using them inappropriately ,  with a recent increase in road deaths the Garda are appealing to road users to get back to basics and get there lighting right.

The Garda will be issuing 60 euro on the spot fines for non compliance in this area.  Please give yourself every chance of being seen.
Learn to drive Dublin believe that this is a fantastic operation and can only benefit drivers and learner drivers alike.

How to check if your driving instructor is approved by the RSA

How to check if your driving instructor is approved by the RSA
If you thinking about taking driving lessons in Dublin or anywhere in Ireland, you will need to check if your driving school or driving instructor are registered by the RSA. If you are taking EDT driving  lessons you will need to have a RSA ADI (approved driving instructor) provide the driving lessons. If your current driving instructor is not an ADI then you will not be able to take your practical driving test until you complete your EDT driving lessons with a Registered ADI

How do I check the ADI Register?
This is very easy, all you need do is click the link here and insert the your driving instructor number, your driving instructor is required to display his number in his car or on his person at all times while conducting a driving lesson. If your driver does not have a ADI number then he or she is not a registered approved driving instructor and is not able to provide EDT Driving lessons

Here is an example of an ADI number

Some of these restrictions include:

  • You can drive a automatic transmission unaccompanied, with no restrictions, however if you choose to drive a manual transmission you must be accompanied by a qualified with no restrictions on their license, you are effectively treated as a learner driver when driving a manual transmission car.

  • These conditions will apply in other EU member states

  • You may not be insured to drive a manual transmission car.
